LJHS 7th Grade Football

IMG_5902

The 7th grade Warriors won their first game vs Beavercreek. They beat them 42-13. They started to slip in the second half. On the second game vs Huber, it wasn’t pretty and the Warriors lost 42-13. Those games are in the past, let’s go to the next games. On Wednesday they  played Xenia. They  lost a very close game, 13-8. In my opinion, Isaiah White- Young, one of the best players of the game, had one touchdown and 2 interceptions. Without him, the score wouldn’t have been as close as it was. This week they have 3 games, two for B team and one for A team.

Some strengths of the LJHS 7th grade football team is they  have a really fast offense. They have a lot of confidence going into the game and whenever they get knocked down they get back up again.

Some weaknesses are when they get onto the field  and see some new faces they start to get a bit timid and nervous. They need to wrap up their tackles.  Other than that, they are looking like a great team and are ready for the rest of the season.

Lebanon Golf Team

By Jordan Cain

This is now the 3rd year that Lebanon will have a middle school team representing them out on the golf course. This team is not junior high sponsered however, they represent the Warriors well. This team was started by Lebanon parents, Cody and Tara Woodard, and Gary and Wendy Mockabee. Their mission is to grow the  interest of golf here in Lebanon.

This year’s team has come racing out of the gates.  A 7-2 start is proving that the Woodard’s and Mockabee’s are getting closer to their goal. Through 9 matches, 6 different players have gotten medalist, or the top score in a match. The numbers show that this team is strong throughout and not just spearheaded by a couple of players. Their 2 losses have included one to SMOY (Saint Margaret of York), who they would later get some revenge on, and a nail biter against Springboro where Lebanon lost by 2 on the 2nd tiebreaker. Big wins include the revenge match against SMOY, and 2 big victories over a tough Incarnation team. In the Cincinnati Middle School League Tournament, Lebanon finished an impressive 5th out of 16 teams, and 2nd in a putting competition at that tournament.

Based on the success of this year’s team, golf is beginning to take off here in Lebanon.

As many of you know the college football season has just begun.  We’re going to preview the power 5 conference winners, the college football playoff and the Heisman Trophy hopefuls.

We’ll start with the ACC.  The story line that seems to be circulating through the sports media is that Clemson can rebuild and defend the title. But will the more experienced Florida State team conquer a tough schedule and take the ACC crown?  It seems like every year the ACC comes down to the Florida State vs. Clemson game.  This year the game will be played in Death Valley on November the 11th. Florida State has a sophomore quarterback, Deondre Francois, who is ready for a breakout season but they lost star running back Dalvin Cook to the NFL. Clemson took a big hit losing not only their star quarterback, but their leader in Deshaun Watson. This loss is what we think gives Florida State the ability to deny the reigning national champs of the ACC title.

Predicted Champ: Florida State

Heisman Hopeful: Louisville QB Lamar Jackson

Next up is the Big 12 who will be playing a conference title game for the first time since 2010.  It seems like this conference is going to come down to the Bedlam game between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Oklahoma returns senior quarterback Baker Mayfield but lost important skill position players Wide Receiver Dede Westbrook, controversial Running Back Joe Mixon and Running Back Samaje Perine.  Oklahoma also lost head coach Bob Stoops who many people believe is a future college football Hall of Famer.  He has been replaced by his thirty-three year old offensive coordinator, Lincoln Riley.  Oklahoma State vaulted to the top of the college football world when quarterback Mason Rudolph and wide receiver James Washington announced they were both returning for their senior season.  We believe that the experienced Oklahoma State team will win the Bedlam and take the Big 12 crown.

Predicted Champ: Oklahoma State

Heisman Hopeful: Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield

Time to go down south to the recruit-heavy SEC. Alabama looks to be dominant once again but there are two games where a slip-up could cost them their 4th straight and 27th overall SEC title. November 4th at home versus LSU is the first. The Tigers have a running back in Derrius Guice who is bound to tear up some defenses this year. But Alabama has a defense that never fails to be one of the top defenses in the nation. It looks like the Tide will be rolling this week, not Derrius Guice. Of course, every Alabama season ends with the Iron Bowl against Auburn. This year the game will be at Auburn. This isn’t the same Auburn team as last year. They have much more talent and a transfer QB in Jarrett Stidham that will give them a rocket-arm they haven’t had in awhile. However, unless something as magical as the Chris Davis Jr. return happens, Nick Saban will be holding yet another trophy.

Predicted Champ: Alabama

Heisman Hopeful: Georgia RB Nick Chubb

Time to head west across Interstate 10 to the Pac 12 race centered around Los Angeles.  The Pac 12 race seems to be centered around UCLA star quarterback James Rosen and USC star quarterback Sam Darnold.  Sam Darnold earned the job part of the way through the season last year and USC exploded to a great season that included a huge victory in the the Rose Bowl over Penn State.  Josh Rosen has been the chosen one since he stepped foot on the UCLA campus but has never led the team to a successful season.  Some people believe this will be his year but we believe USC will be too much for the Bruins.

Predicted Champ: USC

Heisman Hopeful: USC QB Sam Darnold

Now will finish up our conference previews with the Big 10 conference.  It seems like the champion will surely come out of the tough eastern division again this year.  But watch out for Paul Chryst’s Wisconsin team that was seems to have a tough defense.  In the east Michigan is always a factor under new head coach Jim Harbaugh but it looks like a rebuilding year for the Wolverines after losing 17 starters.  Penn State also looks like a threat again this year with star running back, Saquon Barkley.  They also return quarterback Trace McSorley who had a great finish to the season last year.  Then there is always The Ohio State University Buckeyes.  Urban Meyer has another talented bunch in Columbus this year.  Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano said, “it is the most talented defense he has ever coached and he coached some great Miami Hurricane Defenses and a good NFL defense, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when they had elite NFL defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.”  While this may a little bit overboard the Buckeyes do have an elite defense with an amazing defensive line. The Buckeyes return veteran quarterback J.T. Barret too.  The Buckeyes will have the largest line in college football. Some struggles in the passing game last year led OSU to replace their offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.  We believe that Ohio State will win the Big 10 with an improved passing game.

Predicted Champ: Ohio State

Heisman Hopeful: Penn State RB Saquon Barkley

Now time for the championship that really matters. Who will make the playoff? Here are the 4 teams we believe will dodge upsets and make it to playoff.  We believe that Alabama undefeated and be the number one seed in the playoff again.  We predict that Urban Meyer’s talented Buckeye team will be the number two seed and face USC.  We also think that Florida State will be the four and will play Alabama the one seed in a rematch of this weekend’s 8:00 P.M. game in Atlanta.  We believe Ohio State will escape a tough game against USC and advance to the National Championship game.  We also think Alabama will not only beat Florida State but blow them out to set up a championship game between Ohio State and Alabama.  We believe Alabama’s defensive line will be too much for the Buckeyes to handle and that Alabama will win another National Title.

We have told you a lot about how we think teams will perform but you may be saying… “What about the players?” Lamar Jackson will have a good shot at a repeat Heisman trophy, something that has only been accomplished by Ohio State’s Archie Griffin.  Nick Chubb from Georgia isn’t talked about much in the sports media but we believe he could sneak up and be a finalist for the Heisman.  Baker Mayfield is bound to be in the running once again… but will most likely fall short for the third straight year. We can’t forget about the explosive Penn State Running Back Saquon Barkley either but All in all, we believe that USC QB Sam Darnold will be striking the Heisman pose at the end of the year. While Lamar Jackson will still likely be dazzling fans on the ground and through the air, defenses will be better prepared to stop him, and all that running could get him banged up late in the season.
